Topic:
There is no
server code for my installation.
Technote 208
Date: 03/05
Product: All Applications
Version:
12.x and up
Problem:
The License Key tool and
my reqform.txt file shows no server code, what should I
do?
Solution:
New Windows operating
systems have a built-in function called DHCP Media Sense
that allows it to detect when the machine is connected to
a network and will turn off the network card when it is
not. Microsoft has published a bulletin on their Knowledge
Base can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;282599
This describes what it is and how to properly disable it.
If you are not comfortable editing your
Registry you can download, save and run this program:
..\Download\Win2000a.reg
IMPORTANT - After running the download
program you must restart your computer, please also check
that the local area connection is enabled.
An alternative Solution:
Question: Why does my Ethernet/IP
locked license stop working when my laptop is unplugged
from the network?
Answer: On Windows 2000 and Windows XP, if the laptop is
unplugged from the network, the Ethernet interface is shut
down to save power. To rectify this, you will need to
install the NetBEUI (NetBIOS) protocol into your network
protocols list (network properties). This will bind the
Ethernet adapter to NetBEUI as well as TCP/IP. Your
Ethernet interface will now be visible to LM if the
network cable is unplugged from the laptop
Media Sense and the Ethernet card. Windows 2K and XP
include a power saving feature called Media Sense. The
system is polled and the card is checked, if the card is
not attached to a network, it is shut down to save power.
However the licensing scheme uses the MAC address on the
Ethernet card as part of the licensing server code. So,
when the Ethernet card is powered down, the server code
cannot be created and, therefore, licensing does not work.
